It is now considered politically correct.

Because they're the natives of the United States of America. In other places they're called First Nations (Canada) or Pueblos Indígenas (Mexico) or simply Indians, because Columbus thought he was in India in 1492.

Indian is consistent with Roman Latin naming conventions, it comes from the word for Indigenous (genus in / of the area). You can have Indians any where.
India isn't the original name of that country / area. That's an English thing, just like poorly educated people say "Latins" come from south America. The Latins are the people who built the city of Rome (where Christopher Columbus came from).
Native American is government management term, it’s used to separate the indigenous Mexicans (Mesoamericans) from the indigenous US populations ... After all we all know Indios and Injuns are different people, right?

Because Columbus incorrectly identified indigenous americans as Indians and the name stuck.

Native Americans is the correct term. The term "Indians" comes from Columbus, who thought he was going to get to India by sailing westward, and instead stumbled upon the Americas. He thought he had found people from India, hence called the Native Americans he found "Indians". The term stuck.

No - Indians come from India.
A long time ago Americans called the indigenous people of America 'Indians' in the mistaken belief that they were in India. However, no-one has called them 'Indians' for a long time now. They're called Native Americans because they, unlike all the white and Mexican settlers and their descendants, were native to North America.
