From six take away nine, from nine take away ten...?

From six take away nine, from nine take away ten, from forty take away fifty, and yet, when you are done, you have six left. How? (Hint when in Roma)

It's Roman numeral gibberish obviously, but the math is not the least bit correct.

    VI - IX = V, -X

    IX - X = I

    XL - L = X

The -X and X cancel each other out, leaving VI = 6

I'm guessing it has to do with roman numerals:

    VI - IX = V - X

    IX - X = I

    XL - L = X

    add them

    V - X + I + X = V + I = 6

It's a stretch but it works. I really don't know.
