Update:

I'm sorry for the confusion. Here is the question.

A person is riding in a hot air balloon, holding a gourd, while moving 7 m/s when they drop the gourd. If the hot air balloon is 24m above the ground, how fast will the gourd hit the ground?

Update 2:

There is another mistake. The person is moving upwards while in the hot air balloon, at 7m/s

Thanks for all the help!

    0 = 24m + (7 m/s)t - (1/2)(9.8 m/s^2)t^2 =>

    4.9 t^2 - 7 t - 24 = 0 =>

    t = use quadratic formula and pick only the positive answer for t.
