John Major signed the Maastricht Treaty and is a staunch Remainer so why was he a Tory and not a Lib Dem?

I mean if he has always been of that mindset why did he not join the relevant Lib Dem party?

He faced a lot of opposition from his own Tory Eurosceptics who he referred to as bastards. If Labour at the time hadn't have been so unelectable he would have been out on his ear. Perhaps he should have made a better job of explaining what the advantages of being in Europe actually were to the ordinary voter.

He is a traditional One Nation Tory who saw the value to the UK in signing up to Maastricht, not a swivel-eyed loon like the current crop of Tory wannabe Cabinet ministers, who he and his ilk battlled to keep out of office for the last 20 years.
