What does mean an wifi router with a 5dBi antenna?

What happend if I use an antenna of 8dBi?

    Several things.

    1) The transmission/reception in the preferred direction of the antenna will be better

    2) The transmission/reception in the non-preferred direction of the antenna will be worse

    3) You'll most likely violate the FCC (or whoever is in charge of radio regulations in the place you live in) regulations for that device

    Much a generic antenna with the needed gain for nominal performance.

    Increasing the gain by 3 Db effectively near doubling the power, this will improve performance but usually has more directional characteristics.
