Do nurse practitioners essentially do the same work as physicians ?

It depends on the task at hand as well as their experience. They typically do follow up visits after a doctor has seen a patient and also deal with lesser problems.

It's kind of like technician versus engineer. They can have physician level (or beyond) knowledge and skill in what they do but they don't have the training to see their work in a broader medical context.

No, their skill set/ scope of practice is more limited but within that scope, they can be very competent

They possess a subset of a physicians skills. So “same work” insofar as their smaller set of skills overlap.

Yes. And usually, for a smaller salary.
