Does a book bought for a kindle ever expire?

or does it stay on your device permanently.  I'm not really interested in joining for $9.99/mo but want to buy a couple of reference books asap.

You don't really buy ebooks, you license them. But the license lasts as long as your Amazon account.

With Kindle Unlimited (the $9.99/month thing) you can read as many ebooks as you like, but (1) not all the ebooks on Amazon are included in it (the author or publisher has to agree to it) and (2) the books disappear when you stop paying the $9.99/month.

I don't think they would if you use them on a kindle app.

If you purchase the book, it's yours. You can also check out books from libraries or use Kindle Unlimited for book loans. Those do expire.

You can use it for lifetime and on any device that has been connected with your kindle account with which you make a purchase.

Kindle Unlimited is a different story.
