What manufacturing processes are used to make springs ( as opposed to regular wires ... ) , why are springs so relatively expensive?

Springs are formed from materials with

high yield strength, and often tempered.

    Once tempered the increased hardness

    causes embrittlement which prevents further

    forming.

Springs are normally formed from steel alloys

which are malleable while annealed then hardened

in finished form by prolonged heat treatment.

Finished springs should not be exposed to high

    temperatures.

Both high yield strength and elastic modulus

are the defining properties of springs.

springs and wires are different things.

    wires send electricity along them.

springs also need to have a very specific density, in order to maintain their nstural shape, whereas wires need to be bendable snd keep their shape.
