Replacing Bicycle Gear Shifter?

If a gear shifter on a pushbike is replaced, do you need to re-index the gears with the derailleur? Or only adjust the tension of the gear cable?

Thanks.

Adjusting the cable tension does index your gears. What kind of shifter do you have anyway?

How so? Most everything on my derailleur evolves around the barrel adjustment and cable anchor.

If you're really, REALLY lucky, you'll only need to adjust the tension on the cable.  But why take chances?  Step-by-step instructions can be found on the Park Tool website on how to index both the front & rear derailleur - which you never stated.  https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help?query=&a...

There's also videos on YouTube.  All ya have to do is search for it.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkZxPIZ1ngY
