    I assume you refer to Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." In this poem the sailor shot, with his "crossbow," a large white bird called an albatross. By doing so, brought a curse in the form of bad luck—a lack of rain and water—upon the ship. He had to wait for the grace of heaven in the form of rain to be freed from the curse. He tells this story over and over, as a self-imposed penance.
