Is it legal to dispose non-rechargable 1.5V AA batteries in the trash (not in the special bins for recycling? I'm talking about in Europe...?

There’s no single European law for that.

In the UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal it is definitely not illegal to dispose of those batteries (whether rechargeable or not) in domestic waste bins. Although users are strongly encouraged to put them into the correct recycling facilities.

It would be exceptionally difficult, and likely totally impossible to enforce such a law and to achieve successful prosecutions.

I know that you are supposed to either completely discharge them and recycle them in the USA. I don't live in Europe.
