For the exact same reason as people kill for any other reason: they feel they are either protecting something important or gaining something important by doing so.

Protecting community, family, nation or religion from a perceived threat is pretty much the same kind of thinking: protecting 'us' from 'them'.

Killing to gain resources for oneself or to lessen resources held by a perceived enemy also has fairly similar reasoning, whether the resource be land, mineral wealth or people.

In short, religion is a motivating factor that is in practise little different to any other, at least when it comes to killing.

Humans are inherently aggressive from evolving from animals and look for ways to express their violence. One of them is to believe in a religion that gives them a righteous justification to be violent.

It usually makes it easier to lure the gullible into being mass sacrificed. Like there is such a thing as a real "war" where people are attacked and have to fight for their lives, so they use the word "war" for sending people off to die as mass human sacrifices in the NAME of "war". Since most people are gullible enough to kill for religious authorities, those who would murder victims as human sacrifices often wear the mantle of religious authorities primarily in order to do that and not to molest children, which is really only a secondary motivation for most priests.

They have been brain washed by the clergy and the priestly class who do not know the true meaning of their scriptures

Why do we kill in the name of patriotism? Why do we kill in the name of psychiatry, mainstream medicine, corporate profit, because the pregnancy was unplanned...why do we thoughtlessly run over the animal crossing the road whose life isn’t as important as our rush to get home to sit on the couch and watch Netflix with a Coke and a bag of chips? Welcome to the world of man (and woman). Unlike other species, we don’t limit our killing to subsistence, we do it for ideals, philosophies, convenience and because with our superior intellects we can rationalize any act, even the most senseless and inhumane.

Because extremist leaders are twisting sacred words to forward their own agenda. Followers are brought into it because of fear.

  • Reasons for that are as varied as the people who do it.  But keep in mind, generally, people kill to protect something important to their culture, whether it's democracy, their king, a particular freedom, gasoline, or their god.

Distinctions are noted re "self-defense," "killing (enemies)," and "murder (slaughter of innocents)".

Therefore, like any other human activity, even as informed by God, religions condone self-defense (including killing of perceived enemies).

A distinction between Godly killing and unGodly (e.g., communist) killing: some souls are loved of God, and not to be killed, others if convert are accepted; with atheist/totalitarian systems, there may be favored classes, but these are somewhat more man-discerned, and there are no "beloved of God" people.
