How has the status of the elderly in the United States changed compared to traditional societies?

The US abuses their seniors making drug prices highest here than anywhere else. Many seniors cannot afford their meds because they are astronomically high. Only the wealthy seniors can get care or the very poor. The middle class has to sell everything they have to get any kind of care. It's a disgrace.

Which traditional societies are you asking about? In some, the elderly are treated with deference and respect. In some others, the elderly are considered a drag on society and are left out to die. Not all "traditional societies" are the same.
