How do you know the trailer is "about to" start swaying?  Answer: you don't.

No; you can't -- not always. If you can SEE it starting to sway, it's already too late.

Not at all. What you need to do is simply take your foot off of both the throttle (gas pedal) AND the brakes. It will correct itself and you can pull over to investigate why the sway happened. Loading a trailer CORRECTLY is key.

If the trailer is about to sway, ease off the gas and hold the wheel straight.

If the trailer behind is swaying ease off the gas, hold the wheel straight and pray.

No, let off the gas and slowly apply the brakes. If the trailer is loaded correct it will not sway. It needs to be loaded with more weight forward of the trailer axle. The best defense against trailer sway in all conditions is proper trailer loading. You will need to check your trailer tongue weight and gross trailer weight and get the weight distributed properly. Most times sway is induced by too little tongue weight on the trailer ball. Your trailers tongue weight should be 10 to 15 percent of the total trailer weight, loaded and ready to tow. Most of the time redistributing weight in the trailer will solve sway issues.

NO! More speed will only make it worse. You should slow down! If your trailer has brakes, GENTLY apply the trailer brakes and continue to slow down until you get the trailer back under control.
