When powered wheelchairs were not around, how did quadriplegics who had zero use of hands and were oxygen ventilator dependant get around?

    by the time portable ventilators were invented, there were likely motorized chairs.

    previously, people would stay in the hospital in a bed if they needed ventilator...and before ventilators were invented people just didn't survive.

    wheeled beds/stretchers have been around for a long time.

    They either didn't "get around" or had a caretaker who assisted them.

    There were no oxygen ventilators before wheelchairs... These people died.
