Can eating 980 calories a day mess up your metabolism?

I've heard that this can cause your body to only burn small amounts of calories over time.

Yes.  If a person eats 800 calories a day, every day, for many months, the person's body is going to adapt to the severe calorie restriction and do its best to conserve energy and hold on to stored fat.  This won't happen immediately, but eventually it will.

For the vast majority of people, there is no need to eat less that 1,200 calories a day. It is difficult to get the nutrients you need when eating less than 1,000 calories.  It is smarter to calculate your BMR based on age, gender, height, and a healthy weight and then eat the number of calories suggested plus up to 500 more per day depending on activity level.

Don't do it any longer then 4 months. Then up to 1,200 to 1,600 and you'll be fine.
