A 1.58g sample of C2H3X3(g) has a volume of 297mL at 1.012 atm and 35 degrees celsius. What is the molar mass of X? SOS!!?

    PV = nRT ............... ideal gas equation

    PV = mRT / M ........ n=m/M .... m=mass, M=molar mass

    M = mRT / (PV) ...... solve for M

    M = 1.58g x 0.08206 Latm/molK x 308K / 1.012 atm / 0.297L

    M = 132.9 g/mol ...... the molar mass of C2H3X3

    Subtract the masses of carbon and hydrogen from the molar mass of the gas, and divide by 3 because there are 3 atoms of X.

    (132.9 - 24 - 3) / 3 = 35.3 g/mol ..... X is chlorine
