That is not why people say that Christians can use guns. Peter was obeying Christ, Who directly commanded him to go out and buy swords to protect the flock because they would no longer be under His direct authority or protection. When the disciples informed Him that they already had two swords among them, Jesus famously said,'That will be sufficient.' (Luke 22:35-38).
This became the famous 'two among twelve' rule later used to organize the Christian knighthood and exists today as the proportion of deadly weapons required to protect the flock of Christ while living under 'secular' rule. It is the basis of the American 'right to bear arms.'
Jesus gave us a parallel set of commands for when we are operating under Christian rule, (Luke 9:1-6). Inside the Christian system there is no need for deadly arms, monetary systems or expensive health care systems since each of these protections and provisions is already built into the social structures that automatically form when we obey the Lord without restrictions from government or criminals.
We cannot just 'pretend' to be under Christian rule and ignore the Lord's commands, however, otherwise we will be the victims of evil and leave the innocent unprotected. In the garden where Christ was betrayed, Peter was obeying the Lord by trying to defend Him, only He was the One exception to the rule since as Jesus said, 'Shall I not drink the cup My Father has given to Me?' (John 18:11).
The famous 'turn the other cheek' commands are not absolute restrictions on defense as many seem to think, since this would directly contradict the above commands. Instead, Jesus is clearly saying that GOD Is present within any clearly superior power, (just as Romans 13:1 confirms), so we should acknowledge GOD teaching us through them with extra obedience, rather than foolishly engage in lost causes or suicide missions.

I think they were the high priest's servants, not soldiers. In that case, they couldn't kill anybody without Roman authorization. They were sent to catch Jesus, not to murder anybody.

protecting yourself is a long way from living by the soldiers
Why they didn't act is because Jesus Spoke
And they were temple guards, not Romans
