In those days and a little earlier, Samsung was not a company which marketed under its own name. It made all sorts of electronic devices for other brands. So when it decided to go it alone, it took some time before it became a big name in the market. Sony certainly had the reputation in those times for being as market leader in several aspects, especially in the professional market for video cameras and recorders.
Don't forget that in those times a "phone" was just that, a voice and text communicator, with, possibly, a very basic camera in the phone casing also. No internet connection unless very upmarket.
