Blister from loose fitting shoes or something else?

My boots were rubbing non stop against my ankle all day. 24 hours later it looks like this. Is this chaffing a blister or something else?

It's abrasion from your ill-fitting boots. It may or may not form a blister. Throw those boots away and don't wear them again. They don't fit!

if the shoes were boots and were loose, or even tied to tightly, could be irritation from that, sure

It's a bad chafe. Keep it covered with a sterile dressing for a few days and it will scab over. You may not want to wear those boots again.

See a doctor for proper diagnosis. Infections on feet or ankles can be bad..

Improper fitting or improper lacing of boots may cause abrasions.

Poor quality socks or socks not thick enough.
