What does cross-reference mean, can you please give examples where the word is commonly used?
Also if you were to refer to a cross-reference in a book is it the same as saying the index section of a book.

The definition of a cross reference is a mention of another part of a book where more information can be found. An example of a cross reference is a citation at the bottom of a page.
In the Bible for example, there may be a cross-reference because an event may be recorded by two different observers. So in the account by the first observer, a cross-reference may be made to the other account by the second observer on the same event.
