You have to be different to stand out and be the best. You have to be unique. You can't just be like the rest.

Seuss is known for his play on words. The number 'one' is an odd, not even number. For a person to be #1, the person has to be 'odd'--which makes being 'odd' a good thing in this analogy.

it is a pun. the number one is an odd number (not even). One can also mean unique, and unique means unlike any other, and unlike means "odd" in the sense of not typical or normal. To be singular you are an odd number and an odd character.

It's a JOKE. He was playing with the notion that 'one' is an 'odd' (not 'even') number.
