Isn't a nuclear war between Russia and the United States only likely if either country is invaded?
A likely war between Russia and the United States would be something like Russia invading a NATO country and the United States coming to that country's aid

NO. In fact, nuclear war and invasion WILL NOT both happen. Either may, but not both.

My issue with the Princeton "study" is the assumption that NATO/US forces would use their sub missiles at the end of the escalation. US submarines are a huge advantage because Russia (nor any other country) knows where our subs are (in comparison, we know EXACTLY where their subs are; this has always been true going back to the Cold War). Within seconds of a confirmed ICBM launch that targets the US (or certain allies), sub missiles would launch ... the Russians would not live to see their ICBM's detonate because the sub missiles are close ... strategically close ... to their target.

Both Russia and the USA know that a nuclear war would be mutual destruction. Russia won't invade a NATO country and NATO won't invade Russia.
