    HDMI vs Optical Cables

When it comes time to connect your shiny new sound bar or AV receiver, your two main choices are HDMI or optical digital audio.

The simplest advice is to go with HDMI when you can. But if you can't it's not the end of the world.

Here are the pros and cons of each.

    The basics

Both HDMI and optical pass digital audio from one device to another. Both are better than analog (the red and white cables). Both can pass multi-channel audio, like Dolby Digital. Both cables can be had pretty cheap.

The biggest difference is that HDMI can pass higher-resolution audio, including the formats found on Blu-ray: Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. These formats can't get transmitted across optical.

In terms of simplicity, HDMI also passes video signals. So if you want just a single cable between two devices, HDMI is your pick.

    Both, in some cases.

HDMI carries digital video plus digital audio.

    Optical carries digital audio Only.

You should generally try to avoid using optical cables these days unless it's your only good option to hook up an audio source, since only HDMI supports all the modern audio standards, but unless you have a high end system optical will probably be just fine if you need to use it.

The audio link in HDMI has a much higher bandwidth and supports higher quality modes than optical S/PDIF. Use HDMI if possible.

It does NOT make any difference if you get the cheapest possible HDMI cable, as long as it meets the standard for equipment in use (or higher) - eg. any HDMI V1.4 cable will work exactly the same as any other HDMI V1.4 cable, regardless of it costing $1 or $1000.

Of course HDMI version 2.0b. Optical cable is a old tech during the DVD era. Make sure you buy a braided cable (as opposed to single line HDMI cable). Stronger signal up to 10 feet from your bluray player.
