When you empathize, you are not internalizing what you see or hear. You are not drawn into it like it becomes part of you. You are not able to feel exactly what the other person is feeling or think like they think, but you are able to envision yourself in their position and understand their difficulties on a level that changes the dynamic between you to one of neutrality to one of respectful concern regarding the particular situation. Empathy often inspires one to problem-solve with others.

When you internalize, you mentally/emotionally/physiologically/perhaps spiritually "absorb" the input received (verbal or nonverbal), and take it on as something you believe, feel, or experience. It is not empathizing, though a person with great empathy generally is more at risk for internalizing things, if they are not careful about the environments they spend time in and how they take care of themselves on a "whole health" or holistic level.
