Why was Religion such a major part of Medieval (middle ages) art?

    Religion was a very large part of life in those days. That's just the way it was. The average life expectancy was approximately 35 years according to the best efforts of historians.

    You were born, most of your siblings died off. You worked arduous, backbreaking labor. Your parents died before they were 40 or 50. You went to church or you were shunned by your peers and if you didn't, you might be branded a witch and dealt with accordingly. You obeyed church rules in hopes to get into heaven because you had little chance of surviving much longer on Earth.
