Why are so many high schools closed campus now?

Primarily for security reasons. Having a closed campus also helps to prevent truancy. Kids need to be in SCHOOL until they reach adulthood, and not roaming around during the day.

Our school did it years ago because of traffic and safety. Many of our students drive. There are a lot of stores around the school and kids would walked or drive over to stores. This cut down on accidents and cut down on student who just didn’t come back to school.

It's because all the school mass shootings that many schools now have limited access campuses. Its not just high schools. It's vocational technical schools and universities. Tulane's uptown campus now has limited access. You have to have a parking permit AND school ID to go through a gate or or card to get into a gated parking lot. You may have to have school ID to get into specific buildings. It's a security, precaution.
When was the Kent State University shooting. Wasn't that more than 50 YEARS ago?

If you mean that you can't just go wandering around any high school campus, it's because of school shooters. Our schools require visitors to check in at the office and leave a driver's license or car keys.

There are many that are because of social media and fights, one social media mentioned a kid brought a gun to a certain school but they found no gun, you might notice some people being called to the office and can't talk about the situation' because the police want it confidential.
