The sticker on my car battery is 5/18. Today's month/year is 9/19. Does this mean my battery is dead?

Under normal circumstances, no. If your alternator is not working, then it may be dead.

No, that is a date. Measure the voltage and current to see if the battery has juice. Load test is best.

IF that is a date, it is most likely the date the battery was installed.
A car battery should last at least 5 years.

The 5/18 is a May 2018 install or manufacture and is used for warranty if you have no receipt record.
How long a battery lasts depends upon the battery quality and environment of use and storage. I'm on battery #3 or 4 in my 9 year old car, but Las Vegas weather is brutal on tires and batteries and paint finish.
The one in my car now is a 3 year 100% replace warranty.
Many waranties are pro-rated.
Your battery is about 16 months old.
