Why do communities waste money on drug users? Isn't the fastest way to end the "epidemic" to let them die?

The problem with that is that new drug users tend to spring up before all of the old users have died. I have an idea that I think would work, but in order for it to be effective, everybody needs to be on board with the notion that adults have complete bodily autonomy. That is, an adult has the right to choose what they can and cannot do with their own meat at all times.

Step 1) Decriminalize the possession of all drugs. If you're caught with the drugs, then they're confiscated and destroyed or used in the program that follows.

Step 2) Establish walled-off sections within cities or states that are drug zones. Doing drugs inside is perfectly legal while drug use outside is illegal. When you enter, you are required to use a legal photo ID and you must submit to a search, in order to make sure that you're not bringing anything dangerous (funny given what we're doing here, I know, but weapons and drugs don't mix very well). Your ID is run against an active warrant search, just to make sure that you're not wanted for anything. You sign a waiver that puts your health and safety entirely upon you and you agree to be used as an example against drug use, should the situation arise (this will be explained in further steps). You make a deposit of funds and you get to go inside. Inside the walled-off area, you can get any drug you want, as long as you have the funds in your account. You are free to do as much as you want while inside, but you are not permitted to take any drugs outside and you are not permitted to go back out until a certain amount of time has passed after your last drug usage (depending on which drug you take), in order to make certain that you are no longer under the influence when you leave. You can sleep it off in a recovery room.

Step 3) You will be constantly recorded while using the substances inside the zone. In case of your death or need for hospitalization, the recordings of your usage can and will be used for anti-drug PSAs.

Step 4) If you decide that you need to battle your addiction and leave drugs in the past, then make those programs available, affordable, and effective. None of that "pray the urges away" and "admit that you need a higher power" crap. Use legitimate practices that have proven track records to help people kick their addictions and give proper funding for it (you can even use the profits gained from selling the drugs if you want)

That's pretty much it. It gets rid of the black market for drugs, it makes drugs visible and above board, which means that you don't have to worry about whether or not someone is on drugs. When given a legal option, people tend to choose the legal option (think of what happened to pirating after services like Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, etc... came out). And the PSAs would be more effective because they wouldn't be some dramatization. Drugs would lose whatever cool factor they currently have and after a spike in drug-related deaths, we'd see the problem taper off and eventually disappear (or at least it'd become a non-issue). We just have to accept that people have a right to destroy themselves and we have to stop treating self-destruction as some tragedy that requires our attention.

I totally sympathize with your thoughts friend I say what we need to do is have two classes of people those people that can pass a drug test they will receive decent pay and the class of people that cannot pass a drug test they will receive only minimum wage and they will not be allowed to operate machinery. Let drugs be totally 100% legal. The street will very quickly clean itself up the drug addicts will die. And if you want a decent paycheck you'll remain drug-free. If not you'll be treated as a minimum wage worker and live the life of a mundane worker. Until drugs claim your life! People will very quickly get the idea drug Free people level wonderful Life those people that use drugs live on skid row. Make drugs legal and we'll put a very quick end to all of the drug crimes they'll be cheap they'll be no reason to steal Dobby no drug games will be no drive-by shootings and they'll be no more drug cartel. Because we'll be able to grow it in our front yard!

Because drug-users can be appreciated humans.

Many drugs can be taken for decades without killing the user: tobacco, alcohol, heroin, cannabis...

Yeah we should treat cancer patients the same way. They should have avoided getting sick in the first place.
