When I was a stupid teenager, I tanned with baby oil on the roof of our garage (went through a window to get there). I was warned by my elders not to do such a thing because when you tan, you are BURNING your skin, like a chicken in the oven. So, after you BURN your skin, it tans. Doing this, time after time, year after year, decade after decade, your skin does get damaged, it does.
As a kid, knowing these facts, I figured old people are stupid and besides, I looked great with a tan. So, I tanned away and did not use sunscreen, even after the time I fell asleep in the sun and two days later, the skin on my entire back peeled off of my body.
My friends and I looked great with out tans and tan lines. I still ignored my elders who tried to convince me that I was ruining my skin. I thought they were nuts because my skin looked great. I ignored the long term effects because my goodness, I was a teenager and looking decades into the future is nothing teens even think about, never mind do we even want to get old like our parents are. Ewww.
Then, after high school, I began a career. Ten years later, I raised children. I still looked great even though I did not spend much time in the sun because I was busy and engaged in my family life. Then, at about 48 years old, I began to notice dark sun spots on my arms and back and some on my chest. Oh crap.
Now, here I am at the age of 60 and even though everyone says I do not look my age, I can tell my skin is damaged by the sun that I foolishly worshiped when I was young. As each year passes, I regret the time I spent in the sun because today I would look so much better had I listened to everyone who warned me about what the sun does to your skin and how it causes your skin to age. From the age of 55 to 60, my skin took a nose dive as it is apparent that the sun did damage my skin. No, let me rephrase that, I DAMAGED MY SKIN.
So, your skin will never be more beautiful than it is right now. So if you take care of your skin now, when you get older, you will be looking very good with beautiful skin.
INVEST in the best fake tan lotion you can afford. Forget about baking your skin like chicken in the oven.
Remember, you have been warned by someone who did not listen to those who warned me when I was your age. If you care about your skin, stay out of the sun or use sunscreen every day.
