how can I protect electronics from EMP scenarios using Faraday cages? Need real technical info?

    The military use a fully screened enclosure, be it a box or a room, the electricity supply comes in thorough an isolating transformer with the primary screened from the secondary, all comms have capacitors on them to shunt the EMP to ground and if that does not work, they have in line fuses to disconnect the outside cables if the EMP is too great to filter.

    Most EMP scenarios are BOGUS because unless the source is on top of you, it has to be a nuclear explosion that burns and disintegrates you first.

    If your electronics has any cables including a power cable, then that is the route that ESD or EMP can access your electronics. Any such ports can be filtered to a certain extent but there is always a limit. See:

    AC line filter

    LAN port transformers

    USB common mode chokes

    Arc gap Transient suppressors

    MOV transient / surge suppressors

    ESD clamping diodes

    So far few answers talk about nuclear detonation device and even someone state to not even worry about such thing as the Faraday cage. But is a nuclear detonation  the only scenario, is it? What about three mile island or Chernobyl? What about a solar flare enough strong to fry all satellites and electronics in a vast area of the planet? or a neutron bomb that detonates at the stratosphere? I am convinced that even is you are far enough from the destruction radius of a five megaton detonation, under very special circumstances, your possibilities to survive are slim but will increase by a factor of the understanding and preparedness against such event. Otherwise, the governments of the nations that hold nuclear arsenals would not spend in their survival of top leaders and would be resigned to "hope" the "others" would not detonate their bombs. This is a topic to discuss at all levels, to spend immense amounts of  time, search, study and money. Some would say it is unnecessary, it is no chance to survive. That negative attitude is unwise and will cause more damage.

    Put it all in a "SAFE- ROOM" and "wallpaper" it (floor and ceiling too) with aluminum foil---seal the cracks in the windows and doors too. Run a grounded wire to the metal surface somewhere.

    A Faraday cage is an enclosure of sufficient size to protect the stuff inside. It can be solid sheeting like tin foil or even copper window screen which is securely connected on all sides seams and corners with gaps less than .1 cm. to protect to 120Ghz. Tin foil will protect to 1Thz.

    It is not really an issue for you. If there is a nuclear blast close enough to you to send a damaging EMP then you are cooked and won t care if the device is damaged anyway.

    Placing in a metal tin or wrapping in foil will do. If the device is not powered, then you don't need to worry about the radiation burst following a nuclear explosion.

    The radiation burst will turn on transistors for a few nanoseconds. If they were powered and in a totem-pole configuration, then they could be damaged.

    Complete encasement in a Faraday shield will offer limited protection.

    Removing all power source including batteries will work.

    EMP comes in many flavors so without a handle on the source of EMP, very hard to determine.

    WRAP THE WHOLE DEVICE WITH ALUMINUM FOIL COMPLETELY BEFORE STORE INTO BOX. THEN PUT ALL THE BOXES INTO SEAL WELL METAL MADE CAGE AND EARTH GROUND THE CAGE WELL.

    TO AGAINST EMP IS GENERATED FROM NUCLEAR BLAST NEAR BY DURING WAR, THICK LEAD MADE CAGE IS NEEDED THAT CAN PROTECT ELECTRONIC DEVICE DAMAGE FROM BOTH EMP AND NUCLEAR RADIATION.

    There are many plans for Faraday cages on the internet. One easy solution is a galvanized small trash can that is well lined with cardboard. If you have a portable radio playing and it stops playing when you put it in the can because there are no radio signals then it is protected.
