Is the past always with us?

It's interesting how the past never seems to truly leave us. History does seem to repeat itself. How close are we to our pasts? In literature we have the same basic unconscious archetypes that have existed for 1000s of years.

Update:

In a literal sense I tend to agree with you. :D

The history repeating thing is a cliche that is not really borne out by reality. Circumstances are changing all the time and if you tried to repeat something you wouldn't be able to do it. The past may always be with us, but the future is where we are going.
