IN my opinion the top three are, in order
It's strange...I'm pretty sure my taste has not changed, but it used to be other apple varieties tasted really, really good to me:
In the last 20-30 years
every time I try one of these I'm disappointed
whereas they used to be my preferred variety.
Has quality control and/or widespread (uncontrolled) breeding caused these varieties to falter where once they were "king"?
That is: when only a few orchards were producing Macintoshes, were they really much tastier (as I remember them) than the typical Mac now, grown almost everywhere and anywhere?
Anyway, the Envys are really good. Typically seasonal. Limited orchards. Not quite as good as they were a few years ago (IMO) but still really good.
The Galas are good, typically available year round and doesn't seem to matter which orchard (they're all good).
Granny Smith - varies from "batch" to "batch", so probably the orchard producing them has a lot to do with how good they taste.
