Or, perhaps he's being practical. Having already raised a baby, he realizes that the money spent on fancy nursery is money wasted, and money that can be better spent on other things. (Baby will sleep in your room for the first 6 months or so, both for safety and for convenience of night feeds. And young babies are more comfortable in a confined space, so that $500 crib won't be used much for the first few months, even for naps. So what's the point of 'fancy?' Baby certainly won't care. A fresh coat of paint, a dresser to hold baby's clothes, a crib (which will likely be used eventually) and maybe a rocking chair for nursing and, if you want one, a changing table.
