Not hard at all but be sure to start by reading, reading, reading - good contemporary poetry. Read a hundred poems for every one you write.

I have never been into it. To me it's just boring.

Not into poetry.....unless you count "There was once a man from Nantucket."

    While poetry often delights,

    Sometimes it descends into trite.

    The critics contend

    That it simply depends

On how well the poet can write.

Surprisingly difficult if you leave it to the low tier of school teachers normally deputised to teach 'English' in the schools.

Better to learn yourself, from enthusiasts, who like it, and want to share the vast store of knowledge they have collected. Then it is an open door. I keep recommending this one book, because it is the only one I have come across which teaches poetry from the starting point that you might want to write some yourself - after a few pages you find scales falling from your eyes: (there you are look! pre-owned copies for less than $4!)
