Does he have a natural janitor face? Then he`s Asian.

On the whole they can be considered to be within the 'Asian' cuisine.

'Asia' covers both oriental / Indian cuisine and probably a few others.

Where I live, north Midwest US, they are used interchangeably. They're the same thing, not only spoken, but in data, like the phone book.

Certainly in the UK, when we refer to 'Asian' - either people or food - we tend to mean Indian or Pakistani. If we want to refer to say Chinese or Thai food, then we say 'Oriental'... It may well be that the person who answered was British. As a Brit, I would say that egg rolls are oriental and that curry was Asian food

'The Orient' is a name we used to call Asia. It's derived from a Latin word 'oriens' which means simply 'east'. It didn't really just mean Asia, at one point it meant any place other than the Western world (which was called The Occident).

Today 'Oriental', applied to a person, is considered not a nice word. Because it used to mean something 'strange', something 'not like us'. They prefer being called Asians.
