Is trying to prove yourself to other people really a waste if it leads to more friends and better jobs?

depends how you look at it

I believe if you want to achieve something you need to be goal-oriented and have a desire to excel but not necessarily compete-competition is unhealthy and it's figmental really.

It is not a waste..... it is an asset because people around us do matter, especially their opinion about us..... what is indeed a waste is when trying to impress others is subjectively driven, meaning there is some element of lack of self-esteem and confidence or jealousy which forces us to show off.

That called being fake and unreal... If your truly real than you don't need to impress

I think trying to do better for your career it is.

as for trying to prove yourself to friends, I personally wouldn't.
