Unless I was going someplace between Boston and D.C., I wouldn't take the train if I had to make it to an appointment. If I'm on vacation, arriving on time is not important, and train travel is soothing. One piece of advice: if you can, board at the start of the route. I was not at all happy waiting 4 hours one night at W. Glacier station which was closed and had no signs or announcements about the train's ETA, and there was no cell phone signal available. Another night we had a 4 hour delay to catch a connection at Pittsburgh, but at least we knew what to expect and left the station for dinner and a walk along the river. You can't do that at the airport.
