can you use iron skillet on smooth top stove if you use a baking sheet under?

You don't need the baking sheet. I use a 12" Lodge cast skillet on a GE Profile range, and the stove top is pristine. If you want to satisfy your fear, sand your skillet with 150 grit sandpaper. Not much to catch on.

You can use cast iron without a baking sheet under it

Do you mean a Halogen hob?
You should be able to use any 'pan' on them.
Just be careful that you dont bang them down on the hob.

i do it all the time-(without a baking sheet)-I am just really careful when I pick up the pan or try to move it--I don't know if the pan would get hot enough sitting on top of a baking sheet?

Cast iron pans and any black metal or iron pans will work on an induction cooking surface. A baking sheet is not necessary.
