I can't imagine very many Americans would want to live without air conditioning, cell phones, Internet, computers, microwaves, or the many, many, many other inventions since the 1950's that have improved life in America. In fact, judging from how people react when the power goes out for very long, I'm confident in saying that the vast majority of Americans would be absolutely miserable in the 1950's and would do everything in their power to get back to now, which makes the 50's definitively worse. Even families, I can't imagine any family wanting to go back to the 50's. Parents lived in abject fear of polio in the 1950's, which was running rampant and leaving children crippled or dead. So add vaccines to that list of inventions that the overwhelming majority of Americans today wouldn't actually choose to live without.
