Why did so many Democrats run for president in 1972 (when Nixon was popular and the economy was good)?
four years later in 1976 they had another crowded field; that one made sense because that was post-Watergate and Ford was still associated with a scandal-prone Nixon administration.
but explain 1972???
was there a perception that Nixon was "beatable?" His approval rating was like in the 60's?
I don't understand.

A lot of people were unhappy about the Vietnam War. That made Nixon vulnerable. Some people do care about other things besides the economy- like needless deaths in a pointless war.

Acutally Nixon's approval didn't reach 60 unitil later on in the process. It was around 50% in 1971.
