Why did so many Democrats run for president in 1972 (when Nixon was popular and the economy was good)?

four years later in 1976 they had another crowded field; that one made sense because that was post-Watergate and Ford was still associated with a scandal-prone Nixon administration.

but explain 1972???

was there a perception that Nixon was "beatable?" His approval rating was like in the 60's?

I don't understand.

      That doesn't answer the question. Watergate happened later.

    A lot of people were unhappy about the Vietnam War. That made Nixon vulnerable. Some people do care about other things besides the economy- like needless deaths in a pointless war.

    Acutally Nixon's approval didn't reach 60 unitil later on in the process. It was around 50% in 1971.

      Lois, that article is clearly poorly researched, it says only 4 Dems ran in 2016 when the number was substantially more
