If my lease ends the end of this month (August) and I paid for rent earlier this month, do have to pay again before rent is due (Sept 3rd)?

Not if you are moving out by Aug 31st.

Not if you gave notice you were leaving at the end of the lease. If you did NOT give notice you were leaving, you owe for September.

If you plan on leaving by 8/31, you won't owe for next month. But you have to have given notice.

Not if you gave the required notice that you were leaving and not renewing. Read your lease.

Did you give notice before August 1st that you were leaving when the lease expired? If you didn't, then your state law may be that you owe September rent. Without you giving notice, or the landlord giving you notice to vacate when the lease expires (which also had to be done before August 1st) the expiring lease automatically converts to a month-to-month tenancy, and each party must give notice to the other to terminate it.
It is always up to you, as a tenant, to know what your rights and responsibilities are in your state. If you have not notified the landlord that you want to vacate, you have until August 31st to do so, or you are going to owe October rent.

YES. Unless you gave written notice that you were going to move. The lease ends on August 31, and then becomes a month to month lease with the original terms in full effect. If you want to move, you need to give notice before the 1st of the next month. For example. If you gave notice today, August 25, the 30 days would start on Sept 1 and you have until Sept 30 to move out. AND you owe for the full month of Sept, even if you move out early.
