I went through many hurricanes when I lived on the east coast. All they do is a little wind damage to the trees. When you hear about bad consequences from a hurricane, it's usually the flooding, which in cases like New Orleans result from poor protection, or levees that fail. In some Florida hurricanes, the problem is that the roofs aren't attached well- they don't have to be built to withstand snows and blizzards, so they're sometimes just stapled on the house. Now I live in tornado territory, and they are much more damaging. I'd rather live with the hurricanes!
