How can I check a motel's camera if something was stolen from me?

I stayed at a cheap motel in southern California. The room's door doesn't have a chain or a bolt, inside. Some important documents were stolen from me overnight while I was sleeping. I suspect one of the staff got in while I was sleeping and stole. I slept for 9 hours that night. How do I get access to that motel's cameras?

Do I have to get the police involved?

Update:

Can I watch the camera tape myself or will police watch it for me?

You can ask the manager, but they are under no obligation to give it to you without a court order. That would require police involvement.

If the items stolen weren't of at least $950 in value the police won't even show up because that's not considered a serious crime in California. However, if these documents included things like your passport that IS a federal crime.

Yes, tell your fairytale to the police.

HaHa: A "cheap motel" . . . . doesn't have security chains or deadbolts on the room doors (as required by law everywhere I've ever been) . . . .but they have security cameras everywhere hahahahahah.

I doubt any staff of a motel would dare to commit a felony stealing potentially top secret government files from you. You probably left it somewhere. Think harder.

File a police report, and advise the police that you believe they have cameras, and they can investigate. Motels will often erase their tapes after certain period of time, so better report it fast.
