How do I protect the track in HO model railroading?

The track is already attached to the board. If I want to make scenery how do I protect the tracks?

Maybe try the wide easy release painters tape. Protects and leaves no residue behind.

Don't glue stuff to the tracks.

Option 1) Just try not to spill / splash paint & adhesive, and have something to hand to wipe it up immediately if you do spill/splash stuff on the track.

Option 2) If you need to paint / stick things perilously close to the tracks, you may want to consider a piece of masking tape as temporary protection.

Option 3) Just put things on loose without bothering to stick it, where appropriate.
