Hello I am a pharmacy student and have some information that may be helpful for you! Consistently using your albuterol inhaler 10 times per day is not recommended. The maximum dose is 12 puffs per day. If you were taking a total of 10 puffs that would be okay because you are able to take up to 2 puffs every 4 hours as needed but utilizing it 10 separate times throughout a day is too much. Although your inhaler may provide immediate relief it can increase your heart rate and put strain on your heart. There are times during the year where you may feel you use your inhaler more than usual due to certain triggers such as the weather and that is okay as long as it is how your doctor prescribed. If this is your only inhaler then it may be time to add on what is called a maintenance inhaler that is taken daily and will help to reduce your need for the albuterol. If you already have a maintenance inhaler then the dose may need to be increased or you may need a different type. Based on your need for the albuterol you should contact your physician and explain what is happening so they can further help you to manage your asthma. For more information you can visit the CDC’s website. https://www.cdc.gov/asthma/management.html

It’s ok in that it probably wouldn’t hurt you, except by making your heart rate pretty high. But needing albuterol 10 times a day is a sign that your asthma is poorly controlled and you most likely need some other medications.

It may be, see a doctor because it does not sound like your asthma is being controlled properly.

If you mean you are only taking 10 puffs a day (with 2 puffs per dose) with the maximum of 5 times a day, that should be okay. However, if you are taking 10 actual separate doses with 2 puffs per dose, that's considered overdosing on the inhaler and is quite dangerous. It can interrupt your heart rhythm (causing arrhythmias-fast heartbeat) or a cardiac event such as angina. Speak with your prescribing doctor immediately especially if your maximum dose is not helping to manage your asthma. This is a potentially dangerous situation.

It’s called a rescue inhaler for a reason, when you feel an attack or symptoms worsening, give it a puff and you’ll start to quickly feel better. My sister has asthma and is instructed to take no more than 2 puffs every 4 hours. So being awake for 16 hours, that would mean about 8-10 daily depending on if she needs to or not.
