Audiophiles, what is a good replacement for the 5” midrange on DQ-10s?
- LanceLv 79 months ago
You need to find out what the characteristics of the original driver are...The impedance (Ohms) must be the same for the replacement as the original driver also sensitivity should be as close as possible with in 2 db; frequency response is not as critical as long as the frequency response exceeds the crose-over points...Also a similar size driver with similar mounting characteristic is also good as it will fit in the exact same hole without changing internal volume or modifications...Any time you change out a driver like that you need to change out both drivers in each cabinet of a stereo pair...No matter how closely the after market driver matches the original if it is not the same exact driver it will change the sound. The closer the aftermarket driver matches the original the better your chances are of getting a satisfactory result...Its not easy to do requires a lot of research... You can also call a company like Madisound, they may be familiar with your speaker and know of a replacement driver that will work...

An exact replacement from Dahlquist is your only choice.

You cant randomly replace drivers. The enclosure, cross over, and overall speaker was tuned using that specific driver. You would have to alter each one of those parameters to get good sound. Not to mention the test equipment to be able to do it properly.

visit an upscale used AV store, some are out there who will do the repair, some are entirely set on selling stuff, taking such items in trade only of they can be rather easily fixed,,if you are up to DIY,the used AV guy could show you who makes replacement parts for dahlquist, order it yourself.

Lets start with why you want to replace them. Damage? Unsatisfied with the sound?

replace any original driver with an identical part.
If the FACTORY designates a suitable upgrade, use that.
Otherwise, you will end up with something that doesn't match the rest of the system.
