Do most immigrants end up in detention centers due to seeking asylum or because they were caught illegally crossing the border?

Both, and both sides will have some sort of stats to back their positions up. It really doesn't matter anyways. The people that wish to cross the border are informed long before they get here which route to take. That is a know. Hell during the Obama administration our government worked with Mexico in coming up with pamphlets. The pamphlets that were handed out south of the border contained all the info as to what to do and where to go to get assistance once they crossed the border.

They are caught illegally crossing and they make a claim of asylum.

The vast, overwhelming majority of asylum seekers appear at border checkpoints. Not only that, but over 90% of asylum seekers attend ALL their court hearings.

They go to border checkpoints to claim asylum, they are turned away, then they cross, then they are caught inside the USA and make their asylum claim at that time. All perfectly legal but unnecessary if Trump and ICE would just let them claim asylum at the checkpoints...
