Do most immigrants at detention centers arrive there due to applying for asylum or because they were caught trying to cross illegally?

They all were caught entering illegally.

I don't know, however applying for asylum is not illegal and those 'trying to cross' are likely to be immediately returned so more likely it is those living illegally who have already been deported once or more or those told to return home and they haven't done so , so they have been picked up and held until they have got another passport for them to enable them to deport them

Applying for asylum. They're not supposed to be in the facility for more than 72 hours but many spend weeks there.
